On July 27th 2006 the long awaited Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Visitor Center was officially opened to the public. Mgahinga national Park happens to be Uganda's smallest national reserve and only covers an area of 34 sq kms. It is located on the south western tip of Uganda, abutting the neighbouring country of Congo. Mgahinga is one of the last natural remaining habitats of the endangered mountain gorilla. Mgahinga National Park is found on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains and apart from the mountain gorillas is also home to mountain elephants (smaller variety of the plain dwelling African elephant), leopards, jackals, bushbuck, badgers and more.
